Sparkle Cupcakery launches ‘The Little Black Book’

The Vitals:

The call to action for Sparkle Cupcakery’s ‘The Little Black Book’ launch went a little like this: ‘Life’s too short; eat dessert first’.  With this in mind we vowed to ditch the calorie counter for the night and indulge in a sparkly cupcake fiesta. Mixing food and fashion can be a risky business but Kathryn Sutton (Sparkle Cupcakery Founder and Director) believes that cupcakes are the Little Black Dress of the food world. Dress them up or down, they are comfortable for any occasion.  Perched out for all to see, The Little Black Book held its own in amongst the black-clad guests. Immersing themselves in cupcake fever were Pete Everett, Sally Obermeder, Rupert Noffs, Tiffany Farrington, Ruby Jacenko, Alex Zabotto-Bentley and Jaime Wright to mention a few.

What went on :

Arriving at Sparkle Cupcake HQ, guests had already started to spill out onto the Foveaux street side of the store. You could cut the frosty air with a knife, but it had absolutely nothing to do with the guest list or the air-conditioning. At first we agreed that the free flowing Moet was the perfect ice breaker, but within minutes the real culprit was revealed – it was what we’d all been waiting for, those perfectly sculpted cupcakes of course!  Kathryn Sutton took a moment to deliver a short but sweet speech, singing praise to her dedicated staff, publisher and guests.

What we’re addicted to:

Baking up a storm: ‘Oriental Flower’, ‘Green Tea and Bubbles’, ‘Pupcakes’, ‘Lemon Daisy’ and ‘Orange Blossom Sparkle Kisses’.

What we’re not: Sugar Coma’s

What else:

We chatted with Nani Indah (Sparkle’s head chef) whilst she was taking a well deserved break in the far corner of the store. Nani coyly revealed the many thousands of cupcakes that Sparkle Cupcakery bakes for Sydneysiders each week. Does she sample them all? Why, it’s all in a days work.

Art Month Sydney 2011 launch party

The vitals: ‘You Lucky Lucky Thing’, was etched across the invite for the launch party of Art Month Sydney 2011, and we sure felt ‘sehr glucklich’ to be on-board. The second annual festival is fast becoming the mecca of all events, which focuses on highlighting the cities continuously evolving and thriving arts scene. The guest list boasted a plethora of interesting arty farty types (of the philanthropic persuasion that is). Characteristic of the creative set that graced the guest list; there were plenty of tongue in cheek antics, and nothing short of a smorgasbord of stimulating conversations to be had. The crowd was well-behaved and enjoyed a rather relaxed and unscripted affair, with an equally unpretentious menu to match (free-flowing Tyrrell’s wines and scrumptious Merivale canapés).

What went on: The Ivy Room canvas provided artist Tom Polo with the perfect arena for his live arts performance. Polo along with the help of wait staff and undercover guests captured conversations, overheard throughout the night and displayed them on projector screens for everyone to see (Waitstaff: ‘Can someone bring the lady with the red lipstick in the corner a new champagne?’ and ‘Yeah, it was nice meeting you. See you at the gallery soon maybe? Drop by’). Sotheby’s Chairman Justin Miller, candidly and almost reminiscent of a live auction, ran guests through what seemed to be all of the 140 exhibitions taking place throughout Art Month in a matter of minutes - phew!

What we're addicted to: Sculpturist Alexander Seton, one of the festivals featured artists, will be dining at ‘Lunch at Lucio’s with Living Legends’ (26 March, 12:30pm). The night of the Art Month launch party, Seton said that Sydney is most certainly the arts capital of Australia, and whilst Brisbane and Melbourne might think otherwise, it’s all here he said.

What we're not: Attending 140 exhibitions in over 80 galleries, and only 30 Days to do it in?

What else? This year Art Month plans to be bigger and better. Each week of the festival will see four of the festivals arts precincts come alive from Waterloo to Woollahra, Marrickville and Potts Point. Not sure where to begin? We don’t blame you. Follow your art at www.artmonthsydney.com
